Rapper Michael Ebenezer Kwadjo Omari Owuo Jr. (Stormzy) and Love Island presenter Maya Jama took to Instagram to announce that they are parting ways after dedicating a year to trying to make their relationship work.
Their shared announcement began with a touch of humor: "While writing this, we found it amusing because we never expected to be the ones sharing news of a breakup. However, for transparency and to give ourselves the freedom and tranquility to figure out what happens next, we felt it was important to let you know."
Michael and Maya reflected on their romantic journey, recalling how they became "truly enamored in 2014" before parting ways after five years. They opted to reignite their relationship in August 2023, but after a year of determined attempts, they have concluded that it's most beneficial to go their separate paths.
"We made the effort, but it didn't work out, and it's okay," they said. "We got together when we were 21 and 20 years old, at the beginning of our careers, and then spent five years growing together and five years apart. This last try required a lot of figuring things out, learning again, and letting go of old ways."
Michael and Maya emphasized that although they were ending their relationship, they would maintain a friendship and asked for privacy if seen together at gatherings like The Brit Awards. "We still have a lot of respect for each other, care deeply, value our time together, and are grateful. We will always remain friends."
Their update concluded with a request for understanding: "We respectfully request the freedom to progress with no disturbance (even though we acknowledge this might be difficult). We have affection for all of you and are grateful for the support you've given us; it has been fantastic."
This announcement signifies the conclusion of a meaningful chapter in both Michael and Maya's lives, but their mutual respect and friendship endure as they forge ahead separately.
